Maria Bo Peronino (MA, BA, Cert) is a second generation Danish Canadian who is also of Italian (Venetian and Sardinian) ancestry and hails from the Salish Sea (Victoria, BC, the territories of the Xwsepsum, Lkwungen and Songhees people). Maria is a designer, crafter, image artist, content creator, reflexologist, naturalist and tarot card enthusiast. She has 20 years experience working in the digital technology field. Her work has been published in books, magazines, feature films, TV shows, museums and databases. She has volunteered with conscious-based projects involving human and non-human (whales) causes. She is also naturalist who finds digital device relief by forest bathing and making handmade crafts. Nature provides the antidote required to de-digitize and thus is the inspiration for The Careful Crafters.
Maria’s scholastic background consists of an MA in Communication and Technology from the University of Alberta and a BA in Image Arts from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). She is certified in Online Learning Design and Delivery from Algonquin College and Digital Media from OCAD University. She is also a certified Marine Naturalist, has taken courses in Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Victoria and completed an audit of the Indigenous Canada course through the University of Alberta via the Coursera platform. Maria facilitates the services at Careful Crafters.
Markus Peronino (Dip, Cert) hails from Kitchener, Ontario (Haudenosaunee & Anishinaabe Territories) and is an explorer who loves gardening. He is a descendant of the Voyageurs (a documented French and Indigenous fur trade family – who predate the Métis) from the Detroit River Region, on his mother’s side. Having spent his early years in Switzerland and Italy, through his grandparents on his father’s side, he was exposed to and influenced by the plants in the Swiss and Italian Alps. He has always found himself passionate about plants; their edible and medicinal uses. Markus is incredibly attuned to nature, often detecting animals that may not be obvious to others. Markus always makes sure to greet the animals on his daily travels.
Markus is currently a letter carrier with Canada Post and has his First Aid Level 2, and previously worked in security and aviation industries. His educational background consists of an Aviation Management Diploma from Georgian College, Private Investigation Certification from the Canadian School of Private Investigation and Security Ltd and a Web Foundations Certificate from Camosun College. He has also completed some schooling in herbalism from College of the Rockies. Markus provides investigative services at Careful Crafters.
Both Maria and Markus share a deep love and respect for different cultures from around the world and here at home in Canada. They value the uniqueness, diversity and community aspect that culture brings. Culture has played a central role in shaping their identities and perspectives and found it to be key in forming a camaraderie with other culturally minded people. People in Canada have experienced a disconnect from their cultural heritages and we hope to inspire others to investigate and engage in that part of themselves.
Fun fact: Maria and Markus met because of their love for orcas, specifically because of one orca named Luna, a wayward orca who Maria stewarded back in 2003.
